This is the story of drop out that is trying to get through school but instead finds a persocom that changes everything. She comes with no memory a hot body and mysterious past. The real question is, Can a man fall in love with a machine?
Alright, to start off this is not a great show. It's okay and I would say rent the first DVD to see if it's your cup of tea or glass of beer, but don't expect me to gush over this just because I absolutely loved the Manga.

On the Pro side this is a well done anime with good dialog and good voice actors in both Japanese and English. The story loosely follows the Manga kind of like how Bleach and Naruto do. The main story is similar but there are a ton of filler episodes that never should have been made. As stand alones they aren't that bad but I'm a hardcore Manga fan so I get upset when the anime strays unless the anime is it's own unique story which is the case with WitchBlade.

The artwork and character design is done by a group of women known as CLAMP. I don't know why they go by that name since I never researched it but it seems like a strange name for a group of chicks. I secretly think they are all lesbians do to their love of drawing half naked girls with other half naked girls doing things that could be seen as erotic.

The Story of Chobits is simple to start but becomes super complex by the end. In the future computer tech is so advanced that people start making robotic computer systems called Persocoms that look and act to a lesser degree like people. These machines can be used as house maids or artificial friends for lonely people. It's suggested that some people use them for sex as well but we never really see that. Some are even made mini to fit in your pocket.

Hideki Motosuwa is a lonely boy trying to get into college. He has no girlfriend and is generally pathetic. He thinks that if he could just get a persocom he would be able to get more work done study better and pass the entrance exams and get into school. One day while walking home he finds a persocom laying in the trash and figures he can take it home and see if he can get her fixed up. He spends a moment at his apartment trying to find the on switch when he realizes the button is locate between her legs (kind of a stupid place for it really but hey CLAMP needed a sex joke right?). She turns on but has no OS. Hideki's buddy helps him out and he finds it odd that she is even running without an OS so he sends hideki to this persocom boy genius to figure her out.
The mystery to the show is where she came from why she works with no OS and who is after her and why. The underlying theme is love and acceptance.
In the Manga there is a lot of discussion about if it's possible to fall in love with a machine knowing they are running on a program and not alive. The question of whether or not they have a soul when their programs reach a level of sophistication that rivals a humans perception of reality and self is also brought up but never openly.
I loved the Manga for those reasons. I often wonder about what it means to be alive and it asked a lot of questions in that area and posed some interesting theories.

In the end, the anime is worth renting but I really suggest buying the 8 volume Manga series. The ending is not very satisfying but the journey is well worth the time. Plus the chick art is hot!
