This is an anime about brainwashed little girls trained to be assassins. I saw this a while ago and loved the dark storyline and the deep personalities of the characters. There's a second season but I haven't seen it yet though I hear it has a better story
This series is about a little girl that survived her parents murder and is taken in by the Social Welfare Agency. The Agency is actually a front for a military counter-intelligence/counter-terrorism group that takes in severely messed up little girls and brain washes them and trains them to be super assassins. They try to strip away their emotions but little girls are totally emotionally driven and those little girl emotions tend to surface throughout the series causing a lot of people to die. When you throw in the fact that these girls have been given advance implants to up their strength and reflexes and you got a little girl with a killers mind and a body that can over power a grown male.

Each girl has a handler that is supposed to control the girls and point them at targets like the weapon they are, but each handler has his own personality that affects the girl he's in charge of. Some like to distance themselves from the girls they care for and others like to befriend them. Each feels their way of dealing with the girls makes the girl respond better in the field. Sometimes things go wrong... which makes for a very shocking episode.
I love this series a lot and think most of you that read Gouki.com will enjoy this series. It has a lot of blood and guns and the story is good. Plus there are a few games based on the series.

There is a season 2 which adds another 13 episodes but is done by a different art team. The story is penned by the series creator and is said to have a deeper storyline that is more focused. I have the second season but haven't watched it yet. It's called GunSlinger Girl II Teatrino and was released in Jan of 2008.

The whole series takes place in Italy not sure why but it makes for some nice visuals of the country side. More importantly the opening theme is by a band called the Delgados which are a Scottish indie rock band. I have all their music and most of it is pretty good but the title song "The Light Before We Land" is probably their best song. It was used in the first season of the series but they switched to a J-pop song for season 2. The Voice acting is pretty good in both Japanese and English.
